The Right Moves

In the darkness, I stir from my dreams and my thoughts begin to sneak in.  Like a bully, they force themselves into my slumber and I awake.  Before I know it, my mind is racing with the same thoughts that I've contemplated time and time again.  When I've worn myself down to exhaustion, I begin to flirt with sleep.  My routine thoughts are slowly replaced with things so random and so unreal ... it jolts me to reality once again.  Damn it!  I had almost succumbed to sleep, but recognizing that my arrival at work without any shoes wasn't really happening has me awake again!

Our minds are like computers, always processing our thoughts and experiences.  It seems that since we finally sold our two houses, my mind is constantly calculating our next move.  Selling everything and moving onto a boat to sail away and "live the dream" requires a strategy when you're not financially independent.  At almost 50 years old, Ken and I don't want to sail through our entire life savings while cruising.  It wouldn't be hard to do.

While I lay in bed, I constantly run the numbers.  Okay let's go through this again ... we'll budget $1500 per month, which will mostly come from rental income.  We'll have a small amount of savings for rental repairs and those times when our rental is vacant (we have a vacant rental as I write this, and working on repairs).  We'll use a portion of the money from the house sales to get our sailboat ready for cruising (solar panels, generator, ground tackle, etc.).  How much will that cost?!  Is our budget realistic?  The remainder of the house money ... we can't touch it!  That money has to be around for later years.  Is that possible?  Surely not.  What if the boat engine needs replacing or we need new rigging?  How long will our sails last?  What if our rudder falls off?  What if our boat becomes a money pit?!

Okay, well maybe we'll have to dip into that money every now and then ... but first we'll try to pick up income along the way.  After all, Ken and I are both smart and he can build a house for God's sake!  We've got some ideas that we're keeping to ourselves for now.  Yeah, we'll be okay .... right?  Okay, well maybe if we just dip into that money just a LITTLE bit every year.  We'll invest the money, so we should be able to make as much as we take out.  So taking a little bit every now and then to fill in the gaps won't be so bad ... if we make the right investment.  Where do we invest?

The stock market is volatile, but if we're patient and stay in for the long haul we may be okay.  But another "correction" is sure to be overdue.  So perhaps a CD ... that's a joke these days.  Okay, but if we keep our rentals they'll eventually be worth more and provide more income.  We could sell those someday ... but then we'd have to add all those years of depreciation to the profit for the tax man.

Are you exhausted yet?  Are you keeping up?  Oh, my mind!  These are the thoughts that torment me every night.

One thing is certain ... we don't want to work the rest of our lives.  We're ready to travel and break through the mental barriers that our society has placed on us.  We're planning our next move ... just hope it's the right one.  Wait, what am I saying?  The "right" move is going for adventure and having the courage to leave the comforts of work and routine.  After all, it's not "comfortable" at all.

I'm sure that many cruisers-in-the-making have these same fears and thoughts, except for those financially fortunate.  I tell myself this is all part of the crossroads we've finally reached.  If we didn't have these thoughts and doubts then we're probably not feeling anything.  We just wanna make the right moves today, so our tomorrows are ones we want to live ... just like Suze Orman said.

Have you had these thoughts?  What have you chosen to do to make sure you're not penniless someday?  We'd love to hear from you!

Frugal Fridays - Saving for Cruising!

Some of you may wonder why I write about finances on a cruising site. Well, I think most of you would agree that one of the top questions cruisers are asked is, "How much does cruising cost"? or "How did you manage to afford cruising"?  With the exception of a few lucky folks, I think most of us with the dream of cruising (or any goal for that matter) have to deal with the financial obstacle of sailing away.  For us, actually getting out there and cruising means pinching pennies and cutting costs any way possible.  That's how this "Frugal Fridays" series was started.

Ken and I have always been frugal, but to reach our cruising goal we've really stepped things up the past few years.  We DON'T ... buy new vehicles, go to the movies, take vacations until we've earned enough credit card "miles", indulge in manicures, pedicures or massages (unless lucky enough to receive one as a gift), visit the hair salon very often (no highlights, perms, coloring), drop a lot of money at bars and restaurants, buy new clothes (unless it's boat worthy), buy things for the house (we're gonna sell it).  We DO ... lower our debt, eat whatever is on sale at the store, bring our own lunch to work, eat our leftovers, make our own coffee at home, pick and choose outings with friends (can't make them all), enjoy a lot of free outdoor fun, and stay at home a lot during the week nights!

This week I'm going to ask you readers for some financial advice!  What tips do you have for obtaining the goal of cruising, or taking a vacation, or buying a house?  For those of you already cruising, what financial advice do you have for us once we're cruising?   Have input about this series?  We're all ears!

Hasta luego ... until then.  Mid-Life Cruising!

NOTB - How Much Will Cruising Cost?

NKOTB (New Kids On The Boat) ... A Weekly Series Sharing Our Thoughts and Questions as Beginner Sailors and Future Cruisers.  NKOTB or Experienced Cruiser ... Tell Us Your Thoughts!

A question almost all future cruisers have is how much will cruising cost?  When trying to find the answer to this question, I often found it to be "it depends".  Cruising, like anything else, greatly depends on the person.  It makes sense that if someone spends a lot of money on land, they'll probably spend a lot of money living on a boat. I did come across a few sites that documented their cruising expenses, and while some of them made me feel confident we could cruise on our small budget ... others blew me away.  Some of these cruisers are spending way more than we currently do on land!

Ken and I have always been frugal on land, so it shouldn't be too hard to be frugal on the water.  We don't care to spend much money on tourist "traps", souvenirs or the latest fad.  We figure that when we're not doing boat chores during the day swimming, snorkeling, hiking or just exploring a new place will be pretty inexpensive.  In the evening good music with a beer or glass of wine while sitting in our cockpit should make us happy.  Although we'd love to hang out with the locals every night at the bar listening to music and making friends, our landlubber budget doesn't allow it and neither will our cruising budget.  Hopefully we'll be able to take part in those "pot-luck" dinners we keep hearing about ... and we'll "bring our own"!

A large sailboat and many nights at a marina can drain a cruising budget pretty fast.  We don't plan on staying at marinas very often, and our sailboat is considered small these days ... a 30 footer.  A smaller boat is less expensive when staying at a marina, and it's supposed to mean less maintenance costs ... we hope so!  However, just like with a house, we know that some maintenance costs are the same no matter what the size.  Luckily Ken is a contractor and really handy with fixing things.

The more "stuff" you have on a boat, the more maintenance costs and energy consumption.  We won't have a/c, and we're not sure about refrigeration and a watermaker just yet.  We'd love a watermaker, but they're not cheap!  We may trying catching our water as a supplement to buying water and see how it goes.   Ken really likes the idea of refrigeration, but it's also not cheap and consumes a good bit of energy.  I never use ice and can live off just about anything, so refrigeration isn't that important to me.  We will have solar and wind power to help maintain our energy consumption and reduce the costs.

A really big factor in cruising costs is whether or not boat insurance and/or medical insurance are included.  These can really put a big dent in a cruising budget, and we haven't committed to one way or the other just yet.  However, we currently carry both types of insurance (with a high deductible on the medical) and it really isn't too bad.  We just haven't taken the time to look into what happens once we're in the Bahamas or Mexico.  We'll have to wait and see.

We anticipate that our biggest expense will be groceries, fuel, boat maintenance, communication, a rare trip home, and those extras like beer and wine. We saw a post from Distant Shores about the cruising budget, and they estimate that a "comfortable" cruiser can live off of $1500-$2500 a month.  We hope they're correct, and if so we aim to be on the low end of "comfortable".  Even with this figure we'll need to find a way to supplement our cruising kitty.  Ken knows construction and a good bit about boat maintenance, so his knowledge should help us make a few bucks every now and then.  We may have to bartend, babysit, etc., whatever it takes!

We're also counting on you guys to click on our Google Ads and/or make your purchases from Amazon and our other product links from our site (on the right).  So, if you want to make an Amazon purchase,  learn a new language, make your own beer or record your own music ... purchasing them from our site will cost you the same and we'll make a few cents.  Every little bit helps!  Oh, and dare I mention it ... there's that donation button too!  =)

Until we start cruising we'll never have the answer to this question, but we know we'll make it work and the experience will be priceless!  We know this topic can be a little personal, but feel free to share!  Then we won't have to ask!  =)

Hasta luego ... until then.  Mid-Life Cruising!
