Friend Turned Stranger?

Nirvana patiently waiting in our backyard just before winter ... and removing her bimini.

With temps in the 70's this week and a day near the water this past Saturday, Ken and I are getting restless and anxious to spend time with our friend-turned-stranger ... Nirvana.  Last summer was spent working on Nirvana, and the poor girl never even got a chance to sail in the lake.  After our daughter's wedding in April, we're planning on putting the canvas and sails back on, finally installing those lazy jacks Ken bought the materials for, and lowering the house one more time.

One evening after work this week, I came home to find Ken sitting in Nirvana's cockpit.  I then heard a noise that I hadn't heard in a while, and it made me smile.  Ken was running the engine!  He said it started right up.  Like the smell of your favorite food, that sound lit up our senses.

With a stagnant real estate market in our neighborhood and never seeming to be able to take a break from that "hamster wheel", our dream of cruising sometimes seems distant and unattainable.  After just one evening on Nirvana, listening to the engine's purr and looking over her spacious interior ... our hopes are lifted.

I found the above picture that I took just before winter.  I listed a home just down the canal (it hasn't sold either) and took the picture from its backyard.  I love seeing our boat from a different view ... I never get tired of her.  It's time to rekindle this friendship soon!

Hasta luego ... until then.  Mid-Life Cruising!

Just an idea: take a week this spring and "live aboard" -- you'll feel like you're moving closer to the dream, and also discover if there is anything you need to do to make her "perfect" for living aboard, while still having access to the house for anything you've forgotten!

Hang in there, it will get better...at least that is what people are telling me. :-)

I like Carolyn's idea...wish I could pull my boat up behind my house right now...would make a lot of "fixing things" go much faster having access to all the stuff back home. My perspective on what needed to be done certainly changed once I started living aboard...even though it is still at the dock.

Good luck with the house...hope it sells soon for you.

What Carolyn said. I think I've mentioned it before. Spend some time aboard, and if possible, move her to a marina within commuting distance and live there for a week if you can. Bet it will be fun.

Hope everything falls in place for you soon.

Isn't it funny that it only takes something small like that to rekindle the flames and encourage you to pursue the dream. I enjoy the blog and hope to see you guys out there later this year. We are hoping to be ready to cast off the dock lines this fall/winter.
