International Redhead Day!

Did you know that today, September 4th, is International Redhead Day?  Being a natural redhead, I thought I would take the opportunity to mention this day.  There is actually an international event this weekend in Breda, Netherlands (near Amsterdam) where thousands of redheads get together for activities and photo shoots throughout the weekend.  I really wish I was there!  After all those years in elementary school feeling like the oddball, how cool would it be to be in Amsterdam with so many fellow redheads?

This event was started in 2005 by an artist, Bart Rowuenhorst, who liked to paint redheads.  (The photo above was taken by him).  Natural redheads are hard to find in the Netherlands, so he put out an ad asking for redheaded volunteers.  He had over 150 volunteers, which was much more than he expected.  So, in addition to painting he decided to do a photo shoot.  Since then the event has grown into the thousands, with participants from all over the world.  Even more information on Redhead Day is available if you love redheads and feel like reading.

Did you know that red hair is found on less than 1% of the population?  We're becoming more and more rare, and scientists predict we could become extinct within the next 100 years!  We don't turn gray, our hair just turns sandy and then white.  (I was unaware of this, and happy to learn it).  We're less receptive to anesthesia, and more tolerant to pain.

Legend has it that our fiery hair leads to a hot temper.  I'm a Scorpio and a redhead, so watch out!  Actually, I'm pretty easy-going and it takes a lot to get me mad.  Just be nice to me and I'll be nice to you.   =)

I've been aware of this event for the past couple of years, and really hope to make it there one day.  Ken and I have never visited Amsterdam, and this would be the perfect excuse.  I don't know if we'll ever make it there with cruising in the future, but I sure hope so.  There are a lot of hostels in the area, so who knows?

I wonder how many red-headed cruisers there are.  Any red-headed pirates out there?  Hasta luego ... until then.  Mid-Life Cruising!

FYI, I'm sticking my tongue out at you right now!!! No gray hair? That's just not right. Although I have to admit that being a blonde helps just a bit since the gray isn't quite as obvious as it is in dark hair.
If you ever have a chance to get to Amsterdam; GO! I was only there for a couple of days and I loved it. It's hard to describe but it's just beautiful!
