GPS/AIS Combo

Since my post just last week, several unexpected financial obligations have occurred.  So, even though I sold my gold for boat "stuff", we're going to hold off on any large purchases for the boat until we're sure we don't need the money for things like the house mortgage.  They say everything happens in 3's, and we had THREE unexpected financial setbacks this week.  I hope that means we're good for a while.

We've had a good suggestion from one of our followers, "Neophyte Cruiser", about a new product that is both a GPS and an AIS.  It's called the Smarter Chart 500 from Digital Yacht and it's about $650.  We were really glad for this suggestion, and we are going to give this serious consideration since we need both a GPS and an AIS.  Also, this combo doesn't seem much more expensive than just a GPS.  We couldn't find any reviews on this product since it's so new, so if anybody has experience with this GPS/AIS we'd love to hear about it.

The weather hasn't been cooperating with our sailing schedule, so we haven't yet had the opportunity to get any sailing in this past week either.  Hopefully that will change soon.  We need the "escape".  Hasta luego ... until then.  Mid-Life Cruising!

Don't know anything about that system, but I'm sure you'll do your research prior to any purchase. Essential equipment though.

I hope the weather cooperates soon and you can get out and take a sail.

Have a terrific day. :)

I don't know about that particular plotter, but the Cmap cartridges that it takes were the best deal when we were outfitting. The bluechart cartridges were much more expensive.

Thanks Chad! We're still looking ... so much to think about when you're just learning.
